Carpet Care & Maintenance

Daily care & maintenance

Place door mats or area rugs wherever there are entrances to your home. These will protect your carpet from soil tracked in from outside. Just a small investment in these mats can prevent a lot of dirt and grime from getting ground into your rug fibers, which can dull and fray them over time.

Remove outdoor shoes before walking across your carpet so you don’t track dirt inside the house. A high-quality carpet pad adds additional support and softness while absorbing more impact. Vacuum your carpets frequently using a manufacturer-approved appliance to remove dirt and trapped allergens such as dander and pet hair.

Dealing with spills & stains

If you spill on your carpet, don't panic! Many of our carpets have built-in technology that helps them resist stains. Before you tackle cleaning any spills or stains, establish whether it’s an oil-based stain or water-based stain. Some messes will just wipe away with a cleaning cloth while others will require a more comprehensive approach. Then, check your manufacturer's care guidelines for any stain removal tips. If your carpet is manufactured by Shaw Floors, we recommend using the R2X Carpet Stain & Soil Remover.

It's not a bad idea to give your carpets the occasional deep clean, especially if they are in high-traffic areas. Contact a professional cleaning service or shampoo your carpets yourself. If you do shampoo them yourself, be sure to follow your manufacturer's recommendations for maximum effectiveness. Consider a deep clean once or twice a year.
